How to play
Vibophone uses symbols instead of words. Five short demos are also built in: open Settings and tap the play symbol.
Make a sound
- Touch anywhere on the dark field. Each finger plays its own note; touch with several fingers for an interval or chord.
- Move up or down for scale steps, sideways for semitones. New places are read relative to your last touch. Slide a held finger for a glissando.
- Your last notes stay on the field as thin rings (ten by default) and fade after you let go. Tap a visible ring to repeat its note and refresh it.
- The three wave symbols at the top select bass, tenor and alto. Tap the selected register again to raise it by an octave.
Harmony
- The chord button at the top opens a circle of six chords in your key. The cross in the middle releases the harmony.
- Record chord changes in the harmony loop. While it plays, the chord button shows the current and the next chord. Opening the circle does not stop your loops.
- Choose a soft pad or an arpeggio with the symbol next to the harmony loop. Turn on Follow harmony (the link symbol in Settings) to fit new melody notes to the current chord.
Record loops
- Tap one of the four rings to arm it; your next note starts recording. Tap it again to close the loop.
- Loops keep the time you played: no tempo or grid. The play button between the rings starts and pauses all loops.
- Swipe sideways on a ring to mute or unmute it, vertically to change its volume. Double-tap to delete. Completed loops are saved on the iPhone.
Sound and speed
- The waveform symbol at the top left opens the synthesizer. A circular arrow restores its starting sound.
- Settings (top right) hold the key — 12 tonics, major or minor — and loop playback speed from 50% to 200%. Note memory and touch options live in iOS Settings → Apps → Vibophone.
- The built-in speaker or wired headphones feel quickest. Bluetooth can add noticeable delay.
Common questions
I hear nothing.
Check media volume and audio output in Control Centre. Loops start paused when you open the app; press Play. Touching the playing field should still play a live note.
Can two phones play in sync?
No. Each phone keeps its own musical time. Play near each other and listen, like with acoustic instruments.
Can I export loops?
Not at the moment. Loops stay inside Vibophone on your iPhone.
Does Vibophone need the internet or microphone?
No. The app works offline and generates its sound on the device.
Is there an iPad version?
Vibophone is designed for iPhone in portrait orientation.
